As you can see the Biorock reef restoration project is now the 2nd largest one in the world on the Gili islands. We have now 40 Biorock reefs to monitor and maintain around Gili's. The anti-erosion reefs are working extraordinary well. the beach is growing back. The Biorock reefs are getting more and more fish and the corals are growing fast.
The fisherman agreement is still working fine and the patrolling boat is still going out everyday to control our waters. We have to control and protect our reefs from boat anchoring around The Gili Islands. We are putting more mooring buoys available around for different size of boats visiting our islands.
The Gili Eco Trust is now opened to the land projects:
Clean up Day every 1st friday of the month.
We are now associated to FMPL (rubbish collection company) and we are setting up a sorting site and recycling site to sort the rubbish issues out. We are looking at educating people about rubbish selection. We want to make the local people aware of their own garbage and teach them what to do with it so we can send different items to get recycled.
We are printing Re-Usable bags to sell and give to Gili Trawangan residents and visitors. We want to ban the plastic bags off Gili Trawangan.
We are organizing a free clinic for horses with the contribution of Umalas Stables, Bali, 2 days a month for all the horses in Gili Trawangan. We give treatment to wounds, skin problems, dewormer, horsecare recommendations at Pak Nur's place on the 1st and 15th of everymonth.
We are teaching local kids about ecology, importance of the nature and how to respect it. A garden will be soon set up at the school to grow Vetiver grass and trees. This will allow us to repopulate the hill with trees and grass to avoid landslides.
We are doing also lot of renovations and improvements in the local school, kindergarden, rubbish dump...etc and much more... |

Fishing Agreement |
|
|
In February2008, an agreement was signed between the Marine Conservation Office -KSDA, SATGAS, GET and groups of local fisherman to control the fishing around Gili Trawangan. Special Zones have been put in place for the fisherman, which will help improve fish stocks on our dive sites and protect the reefs. SATGAS and members of the KSDA now patrol the dive sites. In 2010, we would like to offer a "juvenile grouper structure" to the fishermen in Gili Air. So they can look after their own fish on this project, and we would re-negociate the fishermen agreement. This project will be done in association with Pak Arifin, Professor in Mataram University, who has already done the structure successfuly in Meniting, Lombok. |
