Mooring Buoys The Gili Eco Trus and SATGAS team have been working hard the last 5 years to put mooring buoys in place around the Gili Islands. We put some in the main dive sites, but also in the harbor area or in front of some businesses asking for our help. All this work done to protect our corals from anchoring. 1 anchor dropped at any depth will kill thousands to million of animals.... We also have put some very long deep mooring buoys for the liveaboard boats passing by the Gili Islands. We have just receive donations from Project Aware for mooring buoys for boat parking overnight. We have just finished placing 11 new moorings in Gili Air, soon we will place 6 in Gili Meno and 15 around Gili Trawangan. The buoys are unfortunately disappearing... and it happens very often. for a shallow mooring buoys, it is easy to fix but for the deep long ones, it is very hard and we are still looking for help from divers to search for the rope down the channel between Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.
Fishermen Agreement SATGAS and Gili Eco Trust with the collaboration of BKSDA and DKP have done a fishermen agreement with 13 families from Gili Air and Gili Meno to stop destructive fishing on Gili Trawangan. they receive compensation every month and they are only allowed to fish within 2 zones of Gili trawangan. The patrol boat is there to check if they do respect the agreement, if not we take a photo and pay only half of the compensation at the end of the month.
Patrolling The Patrol Boat, most of the time driven by Pak Subaere or Pak Sarro is going around the island twice a day, 20 days a month. They are checking the mooring buoys, the fishermen, or helping out when divers need help. They also go out on call if you see something wrong from your diving boat, you can call them anytime. in April and May 2010, they are aso going out during the night with the help of BKKPN and DKP officers to make sure nobody is illegally fishing such as with Cyanide or Dynamite as we had report it happened.
Reef survey With the help of PADI and Project Aware, you can dive and learn how to recognize coral disease, coral bleaching or coral predators. After the dive, you can report it all to scientists working with Project Aware . This program will help coral researches, archives and understandings of what is happening to our reefs. you can sign in for a Coral Watch dive in any of the Gili diveshops.
