SAVING BIODIVERSIY.
More than 3,500 marine species live in Indonesian seas, and especially in coral reefs! This diversity of life forms is higher than that of the Big Coral Reef in Australia with its around 1,500 marine species, or than that of Red Sea with its 600 species. So Indonesia is the heart of marine biodiversity!
Coral reefs’ biodiversity
SAVING AN ECONOMIC RESSOURCE OF THE COUNTRY.
Indondesia has 17,502 islands and 85,700km² of coral reefs! It represents 14% of the world’s coral reefs. A whole trade has emerged around this richness, mainly through fishing, and the degradation of numerous coral reefs in Indonesia represents a significant economic loss for the developing country.
SAVING AN ESSENTIAL SOURCE OF LIFE.
Nearly 85% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the oceans! This production is particularly high in coral reefs which shelter marine plants and seaweeds responsible for the emission of oxygen. Thus coral reefs a an essential source of life for the Earth. And yet, corals, these little animals which develop in calcareous skeletons in symbiosis with a microscopic seaweed at a speed of only some centimeters per year, can be seriously damaged in a couple of minutes!
Saving coral reefs is as important as saving forests! Coral reefs are not visible in our everyday life but they do matter.
